Sandbranch
When the socially isolated, spiritually rich community of Sandbranch is faced with a toxic threat, Khadijah, a young visionary, embarks on an epic journey that explores the meaning of community, identity and freedom.
Sandbranch will innovate in two areas:
Grounding the creative development process in historic and emerging methodologies including Afrocentric Dramaturgy.
Implementing a sustainable model for the production of new Black theatre that engages the audience every step of the way.
Sandbranch is more than a musical.
It’s a cultural intervention.
Project Goals
To create an original musical where every aspect is steeped in Black culture and aesthetics, from creative development to production strategy.
To create an original musical that celebrates and codifies Black ritual, tradition and history.
To develop a future-focused strategy that will serve as a model for Black theatre production.
To engage many Black artists, across disciplines, in the development process in order to get input from a variety of sources and create a community around the project.
To tap into a new theatre market by targeting Millennial and Generation X patrons who attend live performances, but do not typically attend theatre events
To engage the audience throughout the entire development process in order to gain buy-in and support for the long-term goals of the project.
Collaborators
We are looking for collaborators across departments: actors, designers and administrators. It takes people of all skillsets to produce a new play.
Fundraising Committee
We need fundraisers and capacity builders. Let us know if you have information on grants or any other funding opportunities that would be a good fit for this project.
Host a Workshop
As part of our development strategy we hope to host many workshops of various sizes over the course of the next few years. We are interested in non-traditonal and traditional venues. We will need space for research, movement, music and more.
